The Orthopaedist of the Year award is the highest honor bestowed by the Association in recognition of distinguished service, contributions to patient care and commitment and dedication to the teaching of and practice of orthopaedics.

The 2019 Orthopaedist of the Year recognition is awarded to Murray Goodman, MD, in honor of his decades of outstanding achievements, leadership, collegiality and patient care.

The Association is privileged to have had his leadership as a MOA Board Member for 28 years, serving as Vice President and President from 1994-1996. His volunteer board work and dedication to the principles of the medical profession and patient care are just a few of the many reasons Dr. Goodman was unanimously selected by his peers to receive the award.

His affable personality, wit and humor coupled with his decades of knowledge, experience and tireless advocacy helped the MOA navigate the many legislative hoops, regulatory hurdles and egregious insurance practices with diplomacy and efficacy on behalf of Massachusetts’ orthopaedic community and their patients. Dr. Goodman has been a role model to many and his commitment and dedicated work to ensure the integrity of the medical profession, the autonomy of practices and quality patient care remain paramount to the work of the Association.

In addition to his leadership and work with the MOA, his commitment to the profession of medicine is evident on a national level with his service on the Board of Councilors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, where he also chaired the Medical Liability Committee and the Committee on Professionalism and served as a member of the Council on Advocacy. As Chair of the Committee on Professionalism, Dr. Goodman was instrumental in developing practical standards for physician advertising and orthopaedist-industry conflicts of interest.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Goodman cared for his patients in Salem, MA, as a general orthopaedist and hand surgeon while teaching countless students as Clinical Instructor in Orthopaedic Surgeon at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Goodman received his Medical Degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Harvard Combined Residency in Boston, MA, and a Fellowship in hand surgery at the University of Louisville in Kentucky.

The MOA is proud to recognize his outstanding dedication and longstanding commitment and is grateful for the decades of his contributions to the Association, our profession, patient care and above all his warm and witty collegiality. His colleagues, including many MOA Board members he has served alongside, are pleased to call him a friend.
